Why should we consider online couples therapy?
Online couples therapy has grown from a niche alternative to a widely accepted, research-supported standard of care. The rise of secure digital health platforms, combined with a cultural shift in how we access healthcare, has made virtual therapy not just acceptable — but genuinely preferred by many couples.
More importantly, normalizing online therapy helps reduce the stigma that can still exist around seeking relationship support in the first place. When the logistical barriers go down, more couples reach out — and more couples get the help they need before things get harder.
Whether you attend from your living room, home office, or even separate locations, you are engaging in the same meaningful, evidence-based work that leads to real, lasting relationship change. The medium is different. The depth is not.
Online couples therapy: a modern solution to a timeless need
Online couples therapy is designed to help partners navigate relationship challenges in a way that is convenient, accessible, and deeply effective. Using secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms, you connect with your therapist via encrypted video sessions that maintain the same level of professionalism, confidentiality, and therapeutic depth as in-person work.
How does online couples therapy work?
Online couples therapy operates very much like traditional in-person therapy — the key difference is the medium. Rather than meeting in a physical office, you and your partner connect with your therapist through a secure, encrypted video platform in a private, virtual space.
Step 1 – Schedule a 20-Minute Video Consultation
We’ll learn a bit about what’s bringing you in, answer your questions and make sure we are a good fit – before you commit to anything.
Step 2 – Complete Your Intake
You’ll receive intake forms through our secure client portal (SimplePractice), No special technology is needed, just a phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.
Step 3 – Join Your First Session
The morning of your session, you’ll receive a secure link. Click it and you’ll be connected with your therapist in a private, confidential online office. Your therapist will guide you through any technical questions and ensure you feel comfortable from the first minute.
Step 4 – Do The Work. See The Change.
Consistent sessions build real momentum. Most couples begin noticing meaningful shifts – in communication, closeness and emotional safety – within the first several weeks of regular attendance.
Is in-person couples therapy better then online?
It is a fair question — and one we hear often. Here is how we think about the most common hesitations couples share with us.
“I’m not sure it will feel as personal or connected.”
This is the most common concern — and one that nearly every couple tells us disappeared quickly after their first session. The therapeutic relationship forms just as meaningfully through a screen. Research bears this out: studies consistently show online therapy produces outcomes comparable to, and sometimes better than, in-person therapy. The work is real. The shifts couples experience are real.
“What if we have technical problems?”
Our sessions take place on SimplePractice, a reliable and HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable with the technology before your first session. Having the SimplePractice app downloaded on your phone as a backup ensures continuity even if your laptop acts up.
“We aren’t sure online therapy is really the same level of care.”
At Renewed Relationships, our approach online is identical to what we offer in person — Emotionally Focused Therapy, attachment-based work, and evidence-informed interventions. The platform changes. The depth of care does not.
Is online couples therapy effective?
Studies consistently support the effectiveness of online therapy for relationship concerns. Research published by the American Psychological Association shows online therapy produces similar — and in some areas better — outcomes compared to traditional in-person sessions.
Clients who engage in online therapy report high levels of satisfaction, improved communication, and stronger emotional connection with their partners. The increased accessibility of telehealth means couples are more likely to attend consistently — and consistency is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in couples therapy.
Many couples find that the comfort of their own environment helps them be more open and honest with their therapist, leading to more productive sessions. When the barriers to showing up are lower, more meaningful work gets done.

Tips For An Effective Online Therapy Session
Small things make a big difference. Here is what we recommend to help you and your partner arrive ready to do meaningful work:
- Log in a few minutes early so you are settled before we begin.
- Find a private space where both of you can speak freely.
- Check your internet connection and device charge beforehand.
- Download the SimplePractice app as a backup before your first session.
- Give yourself a few minutes after another activity to arrive present.
- Sit comfortably – a sofa or chair works well. Avoid attending from bed or a moving vehicle.
FAQ's About Online Therapy
Is online therapy really as effective as in person?
Yes – and the research backs it up. Studies consistently show that online therapy produces outcomes similar to in-person sessions. In our clinical experience, we have found that online sessions often lead to greater consistency and faster progress, simply because it’s easier for couples to show up regularly without the friction of travel and scheduling. The therapeutic relationship and the work itself translate fully to the virtual space.
Do we need special technology or equipment?
No special equipment or technical knowledge is required. All you need is a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection. The morning of your session you will receive a secure link – just click it and you’re in. We use SimplePractice’s HIPAA-compliant Telehealth platform, which is simple and reliable.
What does HIPAA compliant mean for our sessions?
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) sets the federal standard for protecting sensitive health information. All of our online sessions take place on platforms that meet these requirements – meaning your sessions are encrypted, private and your personal health information is protected by law.
Can we do couples therapy if we are in different locations?
Yes, as long as both partners are located in California at the time of the session. Each client can join from a separate location if needed. We will discuss logistics during your consultation.
Do you accept insurance for online sessions?
We are a private pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. Many clients successfully use out-of-network benefits for reimbursement. We are happy to provide a superbill upon request. Please visit our Fee’s and Info page for full details.
